The TWO types of rest (one you're probably missing) 🤝 Do Life Together

Reader, not sure if you're a driver (I am), but hopefully this'll still resonate with you regardless.

Drivers tend to drive toward making stuff happen. Hard.

But one the things us drivers don't drive super fierce toward?

REST.

And as a driver, let it be said: This isn't be a topic I've loved in the past. But I'm learning to embrace it.

So. One of the challenges I have (and the thing I also want you to think through today) is resting.

Not only resting FROM our work, but also resting IN our work.

Do you know what I mean when I say that?

(⬇️ Btw, you can watch instead of reading, or read on below. ⬇️)

You probably 'get' resting from our work.

  • We go on vacation
  • We have a weekend
  • We have an extra day off
  • We have off from rotating shift work (i.e. nurses, doctors, firefighters, EMTs)

That's when we're resting from our work. It's probably the first thing that comes to mind.

But the other kind of rest I want to call your attention to, is resting IN your work.

What does that look like?

To rest is...

  • To cease striving.
  • To be restored.
  • To be refreshed.

So here are some examples of resting IN your work:

➡️ Finishing part of a project, and resting in the fact that "I've done this part and can relax now. The rest is gonna come together."

➡️ Making sure that you have 25% white space in your calendar. (Or maybe even 10% white space and then grow to 25%.)

Octavia Raheem says

"Rest is a fierce and gentle practice that allows us to rewrite the narratives that keep us small, stuck, and trapped in cycles of unworthiness."

And that's what I want for you today, friend. I want you to get out of feeling small, stuck, trapped, fearful, or unworthy.

Like, "I have to get this done. I always have to be getting stuff done. Everything has to happen now."

Do you see how that feels? Go go go. Grind grind grind. Not a good place to be.

So if you've conquered resting from your work? HIGH FIVE. Keep it up.

And now I'm also going to encourage you to start exploring what it looks like to rest IN your work.

It's going to take some practice. And mindfulness.

Do something, and recognize it's complete. And that it's okay to rest in that. 😌

Because the ironic thing about rest is, it ultimately allows you shift into another gear and move beyond.

So...what are some things you're doing (or can do) to rest in your work?

And when you're in the throes of chaos, how are you finding rest in that?

Thanks for doing life with me,

Dawn

Hey Reader, I was at a retreat center with some clients the other week. We were doing deep work about growing in our respective fields (fitting considering the story I'm about to tell, come to think of it 🤔). When we took a break, I decided to get outside and move my body by taking a little walk. I saw water in the distance, and walked down to the edge of what happened to be the Mississippi. As I got closer to the water, I noticed a lot of the foliage, grass and weeds were darkened and...

Hey Reader, wanna know something that makes my stomach turn? When people say, "You're just so busy..." or "I know how busy you are..." It always makes me think, "Oh, man, have I made you feel that way?" or "Did it take too long for you to get on my calendar?" or "Are you just following my antics on social media?" 😂 I think it makes my stomach turn because I never want anyone to think that my life is too full/busy for the things that are important. So I'm coming to you today to say that... 1)...

Hey Reader, it's October! Let's talk seasons. What I love about the word 'seasons' is, it makes it feel like there's an end to a time I'm walking through. ALL seasons have an end. In the Spring... We enjoy the warming temps, rapid growth, and budding leaves and flowers. (But maybe you don't look forward to the storms it also brings...or the allergies.) Then Spring comes to an end, and we're in Summer. Summer brings beautiful warm days and baseball. (But later we have to fight to keep...
